Elevate [Math] was implemented for the first time this summer in the Evergreen School District, which enrolled 70 incoming eighth grade students to participate in the four-week program. Held at Chaboya Middle School, the Elevate [Math] program combined traditional classroom instruction with a technology component, provided by Khan Academy, to engage students and tailor the curriculum to each student’s needs.
Elevate [Math] was created to prepare underperforming students for success in eighth grade algebra so they can go on to take the succession of college-track math (A-G) courses when they enter high school. Mastery of Algebra I in eighth grade is a key milestone that puts students on this track so they can prepare to go to college. This is also a crucial time when students develop clear expectations of attending college. The Elevate [Math] program includes a college information night for students and their families, as well as a college visit, to help them begin brainstorming ways to reach their college and career goals.
With Silicon Valley Education Foundation working hard to bring the Elevate [Math] program to more schools throughout Silicon Valley, more students - like Alex Fang, Jacob Melius and Alex Peña - will be able to excel in math and get on the road to college and career success.
